South African citizenship law is governed by the South African Citizenship Act 88 of 1995 as amended. This Act covers the acquisition, loss, deprivation and resumption of South African citizenship. The various subsequent amendments govern specific technical aspects which are dealt with on this website. Citizenship of South Africa can be obtained in three ways: - Birth: (Governed by Section 2 of the Citizenship Act)
- Descent: (Governed by Section 3 of the Citizenship Act)
- Naturalisation: (Governed by Section 5 of the Citizenship Act)
